MySQL Administration in Practice
A four-week cohort for teams running MySQL or MariaDB in mid-volume estates — replication, binlog hygiene, and the day-to-day discipline of keeping the writer node honest.
About this cohort
Most MySQL knowledge online is fifteen years deep and still partly correct. We focus on the parts of MySQL 8 and MariaDB 10 that matter to operators who already have a cluster in production. You will configure semi-synchronous replication on a fresh trio, learn to interpret performance_schema without it costing you sleep, and build the muscle memory for safe online schema changes using gh-ost. We are deliberately practical: the cohort spends more time on backup verification than on backup theory, because the failure mode we see most often is restores that nobody tested.
Inclusions
- Three-node MySQL sandbox cluster for every participant
- Comparison labs covering Percona Toolkit and gh-ost
- Backup-and-restore drill timed against a production-shaped dataset
- Mentor review of your performance_schema queries each week
- Reference notes on InnoDB internals limited to operational impact
By the end you can
- 01 Run a semi-synchronous replication setup with monitored lag
- 02 Apply an online schema change to a busy table without downtime
- 03 Validate a backup by restoring it into a clean instance from scratch

Database Lab Engineer who maintains the cohort sandboxes. He breaks our clusters on purpose so participants can practice repairing them.
Common questions
From the cohort
-
gh-ost lab alone justified my booking. I had been afraid of online schema changes for two years.
Yoon S.Yoon S.
-
Comfortable pace, mentor was patient when I hit replication errors out of class.
